Researchers at the University of Florida recently presented compelling findings demonstrating the benefits of maternal bovine appeasing substance (mBAS), marketed as FerAppease by FERA, in fresh dairy cows. Compared to a placebo group, cows treated with FerAppease experienced:
- a 54.9% reduction in metritis,
- an 11.3% decrease in overall fresh cow morbidity,
- a 50% reduction in the number of cows diagnosed with multiple diseases within the first 60 days postpartum, and
- a 29% decrease in pain scores.
In addition to improved health outcomes, treated cows produced 4.94 more pounds of milk per cow per day at four weeks postpartum.
The study included 1,725 dairy cows, including 636 primiparous and 1,089 multiparous cows, from three California commercial dairy operations. Cows were blocked by farm and parity group. Within the farm, groups of primiparous and multiparous cows were randomly assigned to either the mineral oil placebo or FerAppease. Treatments were applied topically within 12 hours of calving.
